LELSEY MEANEY : Becoming Australian : 50 Years

A kaleidoscopic visual feast of vibrant colour, pattern and texture unfolds through a variety and abundance of art works. With a spirit of enquiry, Meaney draws inspiration from the Australian bush, the heart of the forest and desert. Each of these places have come to define Meaney’s identity and sense of home.

This is an evolving journey through painting, drawing, curious objects and stitched works, that speaks of impermanence, the details and forces of nature and their translation into becoming Australian.

The exhibition will coincide with the launch of a book featuring Lesley’s workLesley Meaney Becoming Australian an Artist’s Journey. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to support a brighter future for children with brain cancer.

Shortly after her training in England, Lesley Meaney migrated to Australia in 1969, as a young art teacher. These 366 pages are a visual diary of her 50 years in Terra Australis – of her curiosity and of her evolution in responding to this country. In her own words, Lesley states “Being Australian is not about making a decision or even choosing: it’s about becoming. My journey towards feeling Australian has been a slow process: my immersion into the landscape, especially my five years in the North West, has been a partner in that journey. I now feel I have taken root , like one of our eucalypts – trees which, I think, represent the soul of our sunburnt country”. This hardcover and stitched 25cm x 30cm coffee table book clearly reveals Lesley Meaney as a technician , a master of a number of crafts , which she employs in her work – making it a fantastic gift.
