From 30 May to 20 July, WA artist Brian McKay will be in residence on our ‘island’ studio floor. Between the gallery and his Fremantle studio, Brian will continue his exploration into the possibilities for creating depth, illusion and mystery with his mark making on aluminium.
Working, for the most part, without applied colour, and continuing from where he left off with his late 2007 exhibition at Galerie Dusseldorf, Brian intends to concentrate on his fascination with the effects of light and ambient colour on specially prepared aluminium panels.
Throughout the residency, visitors will be able to observe the artist at work and talk with him one on one as he pushes the boundaries of image making, producing pieces that are elegant and sophisticated, reprising earlier experimental works and, time permitting, transforming and revealing aspects of found metal objects in a proposed series – ‘Roadkill’.
With two free public talks at the beginning and end of the residency and two ticketed Winter Salons, audiences will have a privileged insight into the artist’s theories and motivations including the factors that have led him away from traditional fine art processes to working with architects, engineers and fabricators in the creation of many large public artworks.
The exhibition will change as new pieces are completed and displayed. Certain works will be available for acquisition.
