In Situ

ABOUT:

In Situ opened to an enthusiastic crowd. We received a warm Welcome to Country from Barry McGuire and were honoured to have the presence of Phillipa Butler, Vashti Lane and Deborah Grant all the way down from Warburton. Gregory Pryor gave a perceptive opening speech and we also heard some insightful words from Janet Holmes à Court.

In Situ is one of the exhibition that is part of the expansive and dynamic Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA 2021 - https://indianoceancrafttriennial.com). In Situ considers the Triennial’s intent to explore ‘innate curiosity and rituals that connect us to elements beyond ourselves and our immediate geography.’ In response to the scale and characteristics of the Holmes à Court Gallery, the artists have created large scale and intimate art works that beckon and invite immersive and haptic encounters with place.

ARTISTS:

Shivani Aggarwal, Sujora Conrad, Nien Schwarz, Holly Story and Wilurrara Creative - Warburton Story Wire artists.

Small gestures, repeated actions, daily habits, the materials and objects of home each hold meanings significant to our being in the world. The artists explore the repetitiveness of housework for the sake of harmony; meditate on the dwelling rituals and traditions of past times; on the connection between home and the natural environment and how the home is affected by threats to its environment. Dwelling Rituals presents artworks from artists across the Southwest, Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions of Western Australia.

The exhibition was spawned from a vision of how creativity and creative thinking assist recovery, restoration, and the renewal of life: life for our environment, life for our humanity, and that contribute to the continuing contributions science makes.

Acquisitions

Erin Coates, Heavy Metal Vertebrae, Heavy Metal Petrosal (inner ear) and Heavy Metal C1 Vertebrae, 2020

This artwork is from the Swan River Dolphin Series as part of Erin Coates’ Alluvial Gold residency and exhibition project, which responded to the site of Goolugatup Heathcote, in Western Australia. Wrapping around Goolugatup the Derbarl Yerrigan/Swan River is home to a resident population of around 20 Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins. As long-living, apex predators, dolphins have been found to accumulate heavy metals in their bones. Metals found in the river at contaminant levels include lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, chromium and cobalt.

Chloe Tupper, Red Banksia, 2017

This botanical painting by Chloe Tupper was acquired from the exhibition A Life Within Stillness held at Stala Contemporary.
This exhibition celebrated the work of Chloe, following her passing in June 2020. Chloe States:

"I have been inspired in my recent works by my family's home and garden. It is an area that I have grown familiar with and enjoy. I have selected things that are important in everyday life, and combined these with plants and flowers from the garden. I want to celebrate things that we often take for granted, the beauty that surrounds us everyday, such as our home and garden, and precious objects. I enjoy working in oil paint on linen, building up the surface in layers of paint. Colour and marks are carefully considered in order to reflect the beauty of my personal world."
