Marjorie Coleman | Lyrical Stitch
Marjorie Coleman, Leaf Litter, 2002 (detail)

This major solo exhibition spans five decades to celebrate the creative life and prolific stitched art work of Western Australian artist Marjorie Coleman.

Stitching on cloth gives voice to Marjorie’s stories. Using contemporary stitch as an expressive medium Marjorie produces rich evocative pieces to represent her ideas and experiences, to tell a story of ongoing exploration, and concern for her local surroundings. She takes pleasure from working with cloth, drawing on a lifetime of intimate knowledge, to stitch for her own enlightenment. This exhibition marks the culmination of a series of exhibitions celebrating fibre, textile and stitched art.

Ross Potter, History Raising, 2020 (work in progress)

The swan has officially landed in a multi-layered exhibition, Tracing the Swan, that follows the story of the settlement of the Swan River Colony with the swan as the central character in artworks about race, difference and the unexpected.

In a play between fiction and reality, the black swan is traced throughout the history of the colonisation of Western Australia up to the present day. From historical to contemporary artworks, the exhibition explores how WA was presented to potential settlers, how its landscape was impacted and has changed over time and how the swan stands as emblem of WA against this tide of changes in its real environment.

Acquisitions
Tania Spencer, Seeing With New Eyes, The Time to Re-evaluate, 2020

This work was part of the WA Fibre Textile exhibition, Hanging by a Thread, 2020. It represents houses along a street in Lake Grace. It acts as a memorialisation of these houses in a town that is predicted not to exist in twenty years time. The work is also a record of the typical Australian house, with quaint details such as the Hills Hoist washing line.
Merrick Belyea, Tree on Hill, Nanga Brook Road, 2019

This work by Merrick Belyea was acquired from his recent exhibition Merrick Belyea // Even in Arcadia, There Am I. This work is concerned with the environment and humankind's curious appetite for destruction. As a reflection on the crumbling of Arcadian ideals of harmony with nature, it pictures land around Nanga Brook that has been earmarked for clearing.
