Marjorie Coleman | Lyrical Stitch
Marjorie Coleman, Leaf Litter, 2002 (detail)
This major solo exhibition spans five decades to celebrate the creative life and prolific stitched art work of Western Australian artist Marjorie Coleman.
This is the final week of this exhibition. It is a must see. On the 7th November Marjorie gave a talk about her work to an enthusiastic crowd. Marjorie is a trailblazer in the field of stitched art and has been an inspiration to generations of quilters, embroiderers and textile artists.
Stitching on cloth gives voice to Marjorie’s stories. Using contemporary stitch as an expressive medium Marjorie produces rich evocative pieces to represent her ideas and experiences, to tell a story of ongoing exploration, and concern for her local surroundings. She takes pleasure from working with cloth, drawing on a lifetime of intimate knowledge, to stitch for her own enlightenment. This exhibition marks the culmination of a series of exhibitions celebrating fibre, textile and stitched art.

Ross Potter, History Raising, 2020 (work in progress)
Tracing the Swan is an exhibition that follows the story of the settlement of the Swan River Colony with the swan as the central character in artworks about race, difference and the unexpected.
In a play between fiction and reality, the black swan is traced throughout the history of the colonisation of Western Australia up to the present day. From historical to contemporary artworks, the exhibition explores how WA was presented to potential settlers, how its landscape was impacted and has changed over time and how the swan stands as emblem of WA against this tide of changes in its real environment.
In December we will feature artist Ross Potter in residence at Vasse Felix. See below for details.

Reflection | Submersion
Presented in association with the Perth Festival, 2021, Reflection / Submersion considers the aesthetics of the ocean as a reflective surface and enveloping depth. From the multiple perspectives of above, below and within, through abstraction and representation, this exhibition explores the ocean, its life-forms and the images and imaginary visions that it inspires.

Acquisitions
Holly Story, Red Canopy and Spin (detail), 2011/12
We are delighted to acquire these major works by Holly Story - Red Canopy and the accompanying video, Spin, that were displayed as part of the Fibre exhibition. Holly Story writes that:
“Spin is a commitment to video as a crucial part of my practice. It brings to life Red Canopy, a full circle skirt shape constructed from radiating panels dyed with wind blown Karri leaves. The stilled work on the wall has another life- a working life- animating the wearer and the wind that spins the leaves in the canopy above. I see it as a kind of ritual garment enacting a kind of “sympathetic magic” between the wearer, the wind and the trees.”
George Haynes, Gnarabup Beach House, 2020
This painting was gifted to the collection. George reflects on painting this room with a view, saying it is:
"...a lovely room, all sea and sky and passing storms and of course absolutely impossible to paint - very, very humiliating. It’s like asking Proteus a question - you are not getting an answer till you get the phrasing right - what a challenge.”
Stay posted for our George Haynes solo exhibition opening in March 2021
