Gotham Gets Pickled

ABOUT

Gotham Gets Pickled opened last Friday night in glorious greens. We welcomed an opening performance by Ashley Smith and celebrated 35 years of the Gotham art Studios.

As Western Australia’s longest running artist run initiative, “Gotham has evolved into an icon of independent Western Australian artistic endeavour, placing working artists in the heart of Perth’s CBD for over three decades. Hundreds of visual artists have held studios in Gotham over the collective’s life span, including many of the state’s most celebrated arts practitioners.”

This exhibition brings the works of the twelve current Gotham artists to the Holmes à Court Gallery in the burgeoning arts hub of the Pickle District. Themed green, the exhibition showcases an eclectic diversity of works spanning figurative to abstract painting, to photography, drawing, sculpture and installation.

Dwelling Rituals

ABOUT

As part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA 2021 - https://indianoceancrafttriennial.com)Dwelling Rituals focuses on home and the significance of the everyday. Small gestures, repeated actions, daily habits, the materials and objects of home each hold meanings significant to our being in the world. The artists explore the repetitiveness of housework for the sake of harmony; meditate on the dwelling rituals and traditions of past times; on the connection between home and the natural environment and how the home is affected by threats to its environment. Dwelling Rituals presents artworks from artists across the Southwest, Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions of Western Australia.

Strangers on the Shore

ABOUT

As part of Perth Festival 2022, Strangers on the Shore responds to early shipwreck incidents on the Western Australian coastline and the resulting encounters between survivors and First Nations people. As a contemporary and historical exhibition, it brings together new works from established WA artists, in conversation with key works from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection and artefacts from the WA Maritime Museum archive.

The exhibition explores real/factual and imagined/fictional cross-cultural encounters and the making of myth and identity through coastal narratives of shipwreck, survival, coastal trade, social contact, indigenous knowledge of country and human endeavour.

Sandra Harben is Whadjuk Nyungar Cultural Consultant on this project and the invited artists have engaged in archival research with the WAMM collection to present large scale contemporary artworks in installation, print, sculpture, animation and performance.
