ABOUT

This year the Mandorla Art Award is held at the Holmes à Court Gallery @ no.10. The 2022 theme is:

Metamorphosis – a profound or radical change

“I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19)

In our pandemic world people have been forced to change their behaviour, work habits, eating habits, socialising rituals, and many other aspects of life. In our contemporary world, environmental changes affect oceans, land and humankind. Artists can help us to understand the depth of these changes and open us up to new ways of seeing what is possible, what is abhorrent, what is virtuous, what is needed.

The Mandorla Art Award for 2022 has chosen Metamorphosis as its theme so we can continue to develop our understanding of what these radical changes mean to us today.

The Mandorla Art Award is Australia's most significant thematic Christian art prize.
There is a $25,000 major acquisitive St John of God Health Care Prize, plus $17,000 in non-acquisitive prizes, open to artists across Australia.

Unique States, exhibition view

Unique States

Unique States opened on Sunday May 8 to a generous and engaged crowd. The exhibition offers an insight into different ways of seeing the world and the states we find ourselves in and encounter.

ABOUT

Unique States considers different states and the many meanings of the idea of the ‘unique state’. It refers to a print making technique, to states of being, societal and environmental states and to our geographical state. The past three years have launched humanity into ‘unique states’ and Western Australia has become even more of a ‘unique state’ because of its position apart from the rest of Australia and the world. Unique States presents political and environmental realities, as much as flights of fancy, taking viewers through a variety of unique states via the medium of print.

The works are derived from such regions as the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (aka APY), Martu, Kimberley, Roebourne, Warburton, Irruntju, Noongar and Yuendumu lands. THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO**

Mozart’s masterpiece is a politically-charged comedy of masters and servants trading places - a battle of wits and of the sexes - set to some the most glorious music ever written. Authority is challenged, loyalties are questioned and, in the end, love wins the day!

OpusWA will present some of WA's most exciting young vocal talent in these semi-staged performances at the Holmes à Court Gallery. The OpusWA Arts Orchestra, conducted by Mark Coughlan, will bring this beautiful music to life.

** Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Acquisitions

Margaret Ganambarra (Gudumurrkuwuy), Barramundi I, 2022 (Top), Jennifer Brown, An-gujechiya (Fish Trap) III, 2022 (left) and Lena Yarinkura, Yawk Yawk, 2018 (right).

These works were recently acquired from the recent exhibition at Sabbia Gallery titled An - Jawa (Creek) - New Fibre from Maningrida. "The art of fibre has a long history in Arnhem Land as evidenced by the many depictions of fibre objects in the rock art of the escarpment plateaus. There are also spiritual dimensions to weaving, which vary according to the materials used and the totemic significance of the object made.

An-jawa, translates to ‘creek’ in Burarra language. Many of the works in the exhibition have been created by Burarra language artists. The works on show including fish traps, water spirits and animals are all associated with water and can be seen in creeks beds throughout the region. Fish traps (an-gujechiya) are used in saltwater and freshwater."
