Artists include, William Boissevain, Tom Gibbons, Guy Grey-Smith, George Haynes, Robert Juniper, Brian McKay, Kathleen O’Connor and Hal Missingham.

Harald VIKE Spirit of the Man

Holmes à Court Gallery @ No.10
Douglas St West Perth

Exhibition to be opened by Clarissa Ball

 6pm Friday 5th April 2019

RSVP *here*

The works of Harald Vike come to Perth in this exquisitely re-mounted exhibition tracing some of the major themes of the life of this prolific Western Australian artist. Vike was known for his ability to capture light in scenes picturing both the natural world and the built environment. He was also drawn to people and highly adept at representing humanity across painting, cartoons and caricature sketches.

Opening Hours:
6th April - 28th April
Tues-Sun 12pm-6pm
This exhibition is a fundraising and promotional initiative of the Rottnest Foundation Inc.  Funds raised from the commission of the sale of artworks will contribute to practical environmental, cultural and heritage conservation projects on the island.

The curatorial team decided on the singular approach of providing each artist with a 51cm x 51cm canvas; ensuring all artworks are new and creating a dynamic installation for the gallery space. The idea of using the same canvas size has encouraged artists to make artworks outside their traditional styles.

Exhibition curator, Sandra Murray, says;

“The field of invited artists is wide reaching, from emerging to established, and from many regions, stretching from Albany to Kalgoorlie to Margaret River and interstate. I am thrilled to present a unique exhibition that encompasses such a diverse, appealing range of styles and approaches to Rottnest Island in the one show.”

Talk by Clarissa Ball
Director of UWA Institute of Advanced Studies

In this presentation Clarissa will give an overview of Harald Vike’s career as charted in the exhibition, Harald Vike - Spirit of the Man. With reference to major works on display, she will trace some of the key themes that dominated Vike’s art from the time of his arrival in Perth in August 1929 until his death in 1988. Consideration will then be given to the work that Vike made in Perth during the 1930s. That decade was one of substantial economic, social, cultural and political turmoil and Vike’s involvement in a number of cultural and political organisations saw him produce some extraordinary images that at the time, and to this day, run counter to the popular understanding about art and culture in 1930s Perth. By turning to a number of 1930s works in the exhibition, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, Clarissa will discuss how Vike’s art provides unique and valuable insights into our history.

Entry Fee : $15 or free if you...
