John Teschendorf, exhibition view
John Teschendorff :echoes of place
This exhibition is open until the 24th June, make sure to catch it while you can. It is a rare opportunity to see a decade's worth of art practice by one of Western Australia' greatly accomplished artists.
ABOUT
John Teschendorff: Echoes of Place is a solo exhibition spanning a decade of practice - 2013-2023 - and presenting works from an ongoing project - The History of Ideas.
This never before exhibited selection of artworks shows influences of Italo Calvino and Guy Debord's thesis of invisible cities and concept of the dérive. These ideas provide a way into confronting the landscape as a memory, as a formally constructed space where dialogues of disquiet are informed by the reality of the denial of movement. Whilst much is darkly allegorical, there is always colour to be found, encouraging a belief that humanity will survive the calculated horror and depravity of recent conflicts and events.

ABOUT
This is the second instalment of the Collection Focus series of annual exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Women artists have played a fundamental role in the development of abstract art throughout the 20th century. The specific period of focus for this exhibition is the 1980s and the works span across painting, collage, ceramics and sculpture, to celebrate and acknowledge the crucial significance of abstract art by women in Australia in the 1980s.

MURUJUGA celebration of an ancient cultural landscape
...
Presented by the Holmes à Court Gallery in association with the Friends of Australian Rock Art
ABOUT
Murujuga/the Dampier Archipelago, situated in WA’s Pilbara area, is both one of the world’s most important archaeological sites and a major sacred site for the Aboriginal custodians. Containing the largest group of prehistoric petroglyphs (rock engravings) found anywhere in the world, it also displays the only continuous record of humankind’s survival over c50,000 years in a dramatically changing environment. Awarded National Heritage listing in 2007, it has recently been nominated by the Australian government and Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation for UNESCO’s World Heritage listing. This is only the second Australian Aboriginal cultural landscape to date to attract such an award, after the Budj Bim fish trap complex in Western Victoria.
Join our celebration as over 40 contemporary indigenous and non-indigenous artists reveal their response to the power and mystique of this unique place, Murujuga.

BREAD OF BONE
Following its initial launch at the Holmes à Court Gallery in West Perth, Bread of Bone travels to the Southwest’s hot spot of fine food, Margaret River, and the Holmes à Court Gallery at Vasse Felix.
ABOUT
Bread of Bone features a selection of new works from five established contemporary Western Australian artists.
The exhibition focuses on such ideas as food security, different attitudes toward food, the impact of climate change on food production and supply and the value of eating locally. The artists tackle such questions as; what do we do when we can’t buy food? How do we approach children about slaughtering and preparing animals to eat? How do we promote cultural awareness and acceptance when others eat foods our ancestors deemed ‘inedible’?
Each artist’s perspective on food is explored through the staple technique of drawing, additionally considering thoughts and feelings toward modern interpretations of grinding bones to make bread.
ARTISTS
Erin Coates, Ross Potter, Andy Quilty, Anna Richardson, Ric Spencer

Portrait of John Teschendorff, photo by Lyn DiCiero
ARTIST IN CONVERSATION John Teschendorff
John Teschendorff is an exceptional artist who has had a lifetime of commitment to the visual arts. His creations are respected world-wide, as his career has spanned Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, the United Kingdom, Israel, South-East Asia and Europe.
Many of his experiences of travel and repeated visits to the same spaces have informed his artworks and permeated them with layers of material and conceptual depth. His works are often darkly abstract and conceptually rich; they are like cerebral maps, mindscapes, delineating places and events.
Surrounded by the last ten years of his artistic practice in his solo exhibition echoes of place, this event presents a unique opportunity to be in conversation with Teschendorff, to learn more about his abstract compositions, his making and thinking processes.

This artwork was recently acquired from the Crossing Country exhibition held by Artitja, showing until the 2nd July 2023. The artwork features the story of the Wait Ngintaka (lizard man) who heard the sound of a stone clapping which he coveted and stole and hid in his tail. This led to him being speared and killed at a place called Aran'nga in the Northern Territory.
The 2023 exhibition program is full, however, the Holmes à Court Gallery @ no.10 is available for hire for bespoke events . On a monthly basis we assess applications.
