MURUJUGA
celebration of an ancient cultural landscape
...
Presented by the Holmes à Court Gallery in association with the Friends of Australian Rock Art, this exhibition opened to an enthusiastic crowd and followed up with a symposium which made us all aware of the signficance and tragic plight of Murujuga.
ABOUT
Murujuga/the Dampier Archipelago, situated in WA’s Pilbara area, is both one of the world’s most important archaeological sites and a major sacred site for the Aboriginal custodians. Containing the largest group of prehistoric petroglyphs (rock engravings) found anywhere in the world, it also displays the only continuous record of humankind’s survival over c50,000 years in a dramatically changing environment. Awarded National Heritage listing in 2007, it has recently been nominated by the Australian government and Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation for UNESCO’s World Heritage listing. This is only the second Australian Aboriginal cultural landscape to date to attract such an award, after the Budj Bim fish trap complex in Western Victoria.
Join our celebration as over 40 contemporary indigenous and non-indigenous artists reveal their response to the power and mystique of this unique place, Murujuga.

Bread of Bone exhibition view.
BREAD OF BONE
Following its initial launch at the Holmes à Court Gallery @ no.10 in West Perth, Bread of Bone has been relaunched at the Holmes à Court Gallery at Vasse Felix.
ABOUT
Bread of Bone features a selection of new works from five established contemporary Western Australian artists.
The exhibition focuses on such ideas as food security, different attitudes toward food, the impact of climate change on food production and supply and the value of eating locally. The artists tackle such questions as; what do we do when we can’t buy food? How do we approach children about slaughtering and preparing animals to eat? How do we promote cultural awareness and acceptance when others eat foods our ancestors deemed ‘inedible’?
Each artist’s perspective on food is explored through the staple technique of drawing, additionally considering thoughts and feelings toward modern interpretations of grinding bones to make bread.

Erin Coates, Ross Potter, Andy Quilty, Anna Richardson, Ric Spencer

ABOUT
Presented by the Holmes à Court Gallery in association with the Botanical Art Society of Australia, Flora: The Art and Science of the Plant, 2023, is an exhibition of botanic art coinciding with the Western Australian wildflower season.
Within this exhibition, scientifically accurate botanical illustrations of natural forms are created with close attention to microscopic detail. Using the tiniest of brushes and sharpest of pencils, the exquisite detail provides a richness inviting the appreciation of the uniqueness of nature.
This exhibition includes artworks from the Japanese Association of Botanical Illustrators, exhibiting as a group for the first time in Australia; with the Botanical Art Society of Australia, showcasing artworks from across the country for the first time in Perth, joined by local Western Australian botanical artists and rarely seen historical botanical artworks from the Janet Holmes à Court collection.

Young Australian teacher Bruce Dowding arrived in Paris in 1938, planning only to improve his understanding of French language and culture. Secret Agent, Unsung Hero draws on decades of research to reveal, for the first time, his coming of age as a leader in escape and evasion during World War II. Dowding helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France and paid the ultimate price. He was beheaded by the Nazis just after his 29th birthday in 1943.

Alta Winmar, Creating the Milky Way, 2023
This artwork was recently acquired from the the Koodjal Djookana (Two Sisters) interactive arts exhibition atThe Backlot Perthduring NAIDOC.
"The artwork depicts an interpretation of the Noongar Dreamtime/creation story of the Milky Way. The woman carried all her babies into the stars to form the Milky Way. When a star falls from the sky, she is sending her spirit baby down to help on Earth. When she formed the Milky Way, she also trapped the emu in her hair, that is another story." Alta Winmar
