Strangers on the Shore

WAM WARDANUP - Strangers on the Shore has opened accompanied by a Welcome to Country by Sandra Harben and music by Natasha Aldridge and Brendan Giambezi. As part of Perth Festival 2022, this exhibition looks at cross-cultural encounters along the arc of Western Australian’s coastline. It follows narrative threads that run from the 1600’s onwards, looking at early encounters between First Nations peoples and Macassan and Chinese traders and European shipwreck survivors.

Across a diversity of media, works of invited artists are placed in conversation with significant works from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection, Mossenson Gallery and artefacts from the Western Australian Maritime Museum.

Artworks are available for purchase.

ARTISTS

Johnny Bulun Bulun, Sandra Hill, Jo Darbyshire with Cherish Marrington and David Cherrin, Sandra Harben with Kelsey Ashe, Laurel Nannup, Anna Nazzari, Lea Taylor and Michael Jalaru Torres.  With thanks to Mossenson Gallery for the loan of artwork and WA Maritime Museum for the loan of artefacts.

ABOUT

Since the early 1980’s, Janet Holmes à Court has been an avid collector of the art of the First Nations people of Australia. Collection Focus / Indigenous Art marks the first of a series of annual exhibitions focusing on specific aspects of the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. This year’s focus is First Nations art acquired over the last five years, representing seven language groups and fourteen artists. The works are derived from such regions as the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (aka APY), Martu, Kimberley, Roebourne, Warburton, Irruntju, Noongar and Yuendumu lands. Flying Circus  /  Tony Jones
An enduring love of a life on the Swan river

Flying Circus is a solo exhibition by renowned Western Australian artist Tony Jones. The gallery will be transformed by water craft dynamically floating through the space, accompanied by compelling installations, sculptures and wall works. Jones explores the dovetailing of art and boating, expressing a love of water vessels, life on the river and considering the remnants of a past culture of interactions with the river over generations.

🎶🎵  The Water Concerto  🎵🎶

NEXT WEEK!!

This magical musical event is set within and responds to Wam Wardanup / Strangers on the Shore.

The Water Concerto by Tan Dun is an atmospheric evocation of the sounds of rural China, where the composer grew up. From the gentle rhythms of women washing laundry in the river to the excited splashes of children playing in the water, this is a piece that immerses audiences in the sounds of distant shores.

The soloist manipulates water through the use of instruments which have been specifically designed for this piece, and are accompanied by a small chamber ensemble of strings, clarinet and piano.

Performed and designed by Thea Rossen and Jared Yapp of the Ad Lib Collective in collaboration with the Holmes à Court Gallery, this performance is otherworldly, dramatic and captivating.

Doors open 7.00pm for an 8pm start

Friday 25th and Saturday 26th February, 2022

Tickets $45, or $30 concession + booking fee, available here: https://events.humanitix.com/the-water-concerto
