SUMMARY:OPENING: Drift Woods | Elmari Steyn @ Vasse Felix
DESCRIPTION:Drift Woods is a solo exhibition by Elmari Steyn featuring a considered selection of recent art works. Steyn’s unique-state etching prints take the viewer into a wandering\, many-pathed narrative journey; into exquisitely detailed worlds of wonder\, sadness and delight. Drawing on her background in Namibia\, Steyn folds personal stories into the familiar subject matter of trees and boats\, often pictured in unison. Trees and boats become places of mystery that compel the imagination. They hold memories and emotions. Tree houses and boat houses feature as evocative of the idea of home\, as well as holding a sense of child-like wonder and playfulness. Throughout the works there is a frisson between transience and stasis\, between putting down roots and taking to the skies or seas. Drift Woods\, enables you to consider these states of stillness and movement as you enter and drift through entrancing realms of the imagination.  \n\n\n\nTo be officially opened by JANET HOLMES à COURT AC  \n\n\n\n11.00 am | Sunday\, 26 January 2025  \n\n\n\nOnly light refreshments will be served during the formal opening in the Gallery.  \n\n\n\nTo book for lunch separately\, contact Vasse Felix : P. 9756 5050 or email restaurant@vassefelix.com.au

SUMMARY:Cygnus Arioso // 40th Notes : Celebrating with Music\, fundraising for Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Akiko Miyazawa  \n\n\n\nAkiko is turning 40! \n\n\n\nFor this special occasion\, Akiko reflects on her life with music; \n\n\n\n“Music\, which has accompanied me ever since I started learning the violin at age 3. And the joyous world of chamber music\, which has been my ever-present guide. So of course for my birthday I’m excited to tick off one more in my ongoing Beethoven String Quartet Project\, details of which are outlined below. But I also want to celebrate how grateful I am for this life\, for my parents who instilled this lifelong treasure\, and for everything and everyone who has shaped who I am today. As you know\, Cygnus Arioso is my outlet for this gratitude\, my creation to pass this all on to the next generation. So by attending this concert\, you’ll also be helping me fundraise for the Cygnus Arioso String Orchestra Summer Camp –it’s my no. 1 passion project and next year will be its fifth iteration. As you can imagine\, putting together a large ensemble is an expensive and time-consuming project\, so your attendance at this milestone event for me will be a great support.“ \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, 10 November
2024 \n\n\n\nTime: 4pm – 6pm including interval with a complimentary glass of wine
 (Doors open 3.30pm) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPRICE : $30 – $70 AUD + BF \n\n\n\nHosted by Cygnus Arioso | https://www.cygnusarioso.com

SUMMARY:Cygnus Arioso Winter Gala 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Cygnus Arioso Winter Gala is a celebration of our extended musical family\, bringing together our cherished musical collaborators for an afternoon of effervescent music-making. We hear two works of Mahler: first the Adagietto from his 5th symphony spotlighting harpist Will Nichols before we are joined by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Ashlyn Tymms for his sublime Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen. The Cygnus Arioso String Orchestra shines in an expanded version of Wolf’s Italian Serenade\, before again adding harp for Schoenberg’s atmospheric and melodic Notturno. Bassist Oakley Paul stars alongside Cygnus Arioso director Akiko Miyazawa in Bottesini’s rollicking Gran Duo Concertante\, and Boccherini’s 7th Cello Concerto showcases young sensation Isaac Davis. Perth-born trumpeter Fletcher Cox and WASO principal cor anglais Jonathan Ryan beguile in Copland’s Quiet City\, before Fletcher reprises Lachlan Skipworth’s trumpet concerto Altiora Peto\, promising an uplifting conclusion to this unmissable event. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDoors and Gallery Bar open 30 minutes prior to performancePerformance length approximately 120 minutes with interval \n\n\n\nPRICE : $30 – $70 AUD + BF \n\n\n\n\nGet TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHosted by Cygnus Arioso | https://www.cygnusarioso.com \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM \n\n\n\nAaron Copland : Quiet City \n\n\n\nLuigi Boccherini : Cello Concerto No. 7 in G Major\, G. 480 \n\n\n\nHugo Wolf : Italian Serenade in G Major WWXV/3 \n\n\n\nArnold Schönberg : Notturno for Strings and Harp \n\n\n\n= INTERVAL = \n\n\n\nGiovanni Bottesini : Grand Duo Concertante for Violin and Double Bass \n\n\n\nGustav Mahler : Symphony No. 5\, 4th Mov. Adagietto. SUMMARY:ARTIST TALKS: Mandorla Art Award 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging series of free artist talks with some of our local Mandorla finalists. Facilitated by Erin Coates\, these talks will give insights into the processes\, techniques and ideas behind selected works in the 2024 Mandorla Art Award exhibition. \n\n\n\n\nSat\, 1 June 2024 | 1:30-3pm : Olga Cironis\, Sam Bloor\, Tessa MacKay\, Sarah Elson \n\n\n\nSat\, 15 June 2024 | 1:30-3pm : Ross Potter\, Camilla Loveridge\, Sohan Ariel Hayes\, Serena Parker \n\n\n\nTea & coffee provided. Please arrive at 1:15pm for a 1:30pm start. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOlga Cironis is a multidisciplinary artist who explores the murky undertones and impact that history and memory have on personal and shared identity. Her work is described as psychologically loaded with meaning\, provoking and seducing the viewer to question our social and environmental connections. Olga’s artistic investigations are founded upon her Greek\, Czech and Australian heritage. These aspects are used to engage people beyond the familiar.Sam Bloor’s background as a traditional signwriter informs his use of text provocations and large-scale public artworks. Blurring the line between his trade and artistic careers he intends to play with existing perceived notions of value and labour. Sam has exhibited in group and solo shows both nationally and internationally including\, Totem In Tribute (2016) in Edinburgh\, UK\, the Fremantle Print Award (2016/18)\, Rotterdam Photo Festival (2019)\, NL\, and was commissioned to produce a major public work as part of the 2022 Perth Festival program.Sarah Elson’s interest in traditional metalsmithing and its use in contemporary visual arts practice spans 30 + years. She has exhibited locally and internationally including solo exhibitions Anigozanthos (eudaimonia hybrid) at Galerie Düsseldorf 2007\, phloem poetica at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art 2010 and Fasciation – expectations of growth\, Art Collective\, 2020. Her work is held in numerous collections including AGWA and the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Sarah is a member of Art Collective WA.Sohan Ariel Hayes has achieved international acclaim for his large-scale multimedia installations\, public projects and performance collaborations. His site-responsive process works with drawing\, projection and archival materials to invoke particular places\, collective voices and communities of labour. Sohan was one of the key artists involved in the spectacular Boorna Waanginy – The Trees Speak\, shown as a part of Perth Festival in Kings Park over several seasons.Ross Potter is a Kamilaroi man living and working full time as an artist on Wudjuk Noongar Boodjar\, Fremantle. He works with pencil and paper to produce highly detailed representations of his subjects. Through magnifying microscopic features\, Ross brings the abstractions of reality to our attention\, while telling compelling stories of everyday life. Well-known works include the life-size WHALE at High Tide 17 Fremantle Biennale on display at Boola Bardip WA Museum. Ross recently undertook an artist residency in Siglufjörður\, Iceland. \n\n\n\nCamilla Loveridge is a printmaker and has a particular passion for drawing. She has exhibited around Australia and overseas\, has received awards for her work\, and is represented in public and private collections. She was curator of the Mandorla Art Prize (2009-2012) and worked for the Art for Change Foundation in New Delhi (2016) as an international artist in residence. Camilla also studies part time as a PhD candidate in Creative Practice Research at Notre Dame University in Fremantle.Based in Walyalup Fremantle\, Tessa MacKay’s paintings speak to the discipline of Hyperrealism. The works simultaneously embrace the medium of paint\, and subtle but intentional instances of less-refined brushwork provides relief and reminds the viewer they are before an artwork made by human hands; an interpretation\, not a reproduction. At a time when high resolution images are more ubiquitous and disposable than ever before\, it is through the apparent labour and time involved that Tessa strives to facilitate the viewer’s connection with the subject matter embedded in her paint.Serena Parker holds degrees in Fine Arts and Education\, and merges her passion for art and teaching in her professional practices. Notable for her poesis-inspired miniature pieces exhibited at Heathcoate Gallery in 2011\, she explores the nexus of time\, place\, and representation. Majoring in painting\, she delves into material culture\, fascinated by the history and language of materials. Serena’s work reflects a profound interplay between past and present\, inviting viewers to ponder human complexities. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGeneral enquiries: info@mandorlaart.com | Phone: +61 407 089 224 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHolmes à Court Gallery @ no.10Douglas Street\, Gooyaman | West PerthExhibition: 25 May – 15 JuneOpen: Tues – Sat\, 11am – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: Ross Potter\, Cold Water\, pencil on paper\, 130 x 110 cm

SUMMARY:Portent (a ritual)
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMANCES: 4 February\, 5.30pm & 8.00pm \n\n\n\nThis is a new musical work by Ad Lib Collective featuring Wind Up Bird\, in collaboration with Andrew Nicholls. \n\n\n\nThroughout human history solar eclipses have been viewed as omens of pending disaster. Inspired by the 2023 total solar eclipse in Exmouth Western Australia\, celebrated contemporary artist Andrew Nicholls has conceived a suite of visual art works speculating about the disaster that this particular eclipse may have been foretelling. \n\n\n\nYou are invited to join us at Holmes à Court Gallery @ no.10 for the world premiere of a musical work commissioned by the artist from acclaimed contemporary classical ensembles Ad Lib Collective and Wind Up Bird. Mimicking the timing of the Exmouth eclipse\, audiences will experience a sense of the drama and beauty of this extraordinary solar event\, with its frenetic build-up of energy\, and the uncanny awe of the ‘moment of totality’.  \n\n\n\nPart sonic performance experience and part-magickal ritual\, Portent (a ritual) represents a unique collaboration of creative disciplines spanning the visual and performing arts. \n\n\n\nAudiences are then invited to return to Holmes à Court Gallery @ no. 10 on Wednesday\, 7 February for the official launch of the Portent exhibition\, as part of the 2024 Perth Festival which features the recording of this live performance. \n\n\n\nEnsemble  \n\n\n\nAd Lib Collective: Thea Rossen (Percussion)\, Ashley Smith (Clarinets) \n\n\n\nWind Up Bird: James Ledger (Synths)\, Josiah Padmanabhan (Synths)  \n\n\n\nLighting: Alex Spartalis GSD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortent (a Ritual). SUMMARY:Terra
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMANCE DATES : 18\, 19 & 20 JANUARY 2024 \n\n\n\nterra is a 50min dance work informed by the knowledge of current and impending ecological loss. An un-trackable choreographic momentum evokes the incremental movement of earth’s tectonic plates; the elemental power of the natural world pushed to its limits and the forces that create change.  \n\n\n\nErupting from an imagination placed under pressure for decades\, terra\, invites us to feel what is happening to the earth\, whilst creating something of awe and beauty. With each performance\, a unique topographical sculptural residue remains\, inviting the audience to continue their imaginative engagement with the work. \n\n\n\nThis piece emerged conceptually and choreographically from Alice’s experience of living in Victoria\, through the pandemic\, fires\, flooding\, threatening winds and an earthquake –disquiet was omnipresent. The resurgence of the natural world during the lockdowns\, particularly in urban spaces\, brought an acute awareness of human impact on our living world. \n\n\n\n‘She moved with the kind of felt precision that could change the meaning of the space around her. She touched the floor and suddenly it was alive. The experience was pure and electrifying’ (Erik Jensen\, Editor-in-chief\, Schwartz Media\,  January 2022). \n\n\n\nABOUT ALICE CUMMINS \n\n\n\nAlice Cummins is a multi-disciplinary artist\, working in dance\, film\, performance and installation. Five decades exploring the nuanced intelligence of the moving body\, interrogating and challenging its social and cultural narratives\, have led to compositional refinement and the distillation of experience into physical performance where aesthetics\, ethics and physiology collide. Her current performance projects reflect the entwinement of personal/artistic\, colonial\, and planetary histories. \n\n\n\nEVENT ENQUIRIES: Laetitia Wilson | +61 424 931 242  :  laetitia.wilson@heytesbury.com.au \n\n\n\nSTART TIME : 7.30pm – duration 50min \n\n\n\nTICKETS : $25-$35 + booking fee \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nhttp://www.alicecummins.com \n\n\n\nPhoto by Emma Fishwick\, Alice Cummins in Terra Rehearsal\, 2023\, courtesy and copyright of the artist.

SUMMARY:ARTIST IN RESIDENCE // Angela Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Angela Stewart is a member of the ArtCollective WA and her work is currently on show in the exhibition TEN. She will be in residence in the Holmes à Court Gallery @ Vasse Felix from the 14th November to the 2nd December (excluding the 23rd –28th November). \n\n\n\nStewart has been interested in portraiture for the last three decades. Her drawing\, painting and paint/ed photography often make stylistic and thematic reference to the Italian Renaissance historical portraits and the transition of the fresco to easel painting. By studying the work of Sixteenth century Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola\, Stewart became fascinated by the complexity and etiquette of painting by a woman of this age. Her desire was to roll back the veneer of the finished artwork and to imagine signs of hesitation and mistakes to unlace the becoming of a portrait. This notion of ‘artistic doubt’ has since had an influence on Stewart’s more recent oeuvre. \n\n\n\nOver time\, the rendering of her line and brushwork has dissolved to increasingly reveal materiality and process. With oval and circular frames\, she examines traditional elements such as the cameo or motifs of flora and fauna in landscape and from costumes in portraits.

DESCRIPTION:Join exhibition curator Judith Hugo as she discusses the exhibition Murujuga: celebration of an ancient cultural landscape in the context of the battle to save Murujuga. \n\n\n\nMurujuga/the Dampier Archipelago\, situated in WA’s Pilbara area\, is both one of the world’s most important archaeological sites and a major sacred site for the Aboriginal custodians. Containing the largest group of prehistoric petroglyphs (rock engravings) found anywhere in the world\, it also displays the only continuous record of humankind’s survival over c50\,000 years in a dramatically changing environment. Awarded National Heritage listing in 2007\, it has recently been nominated by the Australian government and Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation for UNESCO’s World Heritage listing. This is only the second Australian Aboriginal cultural landscape to date to attract such an award\, after the Budj Bim fish trap complex in Western Victoria. \n\n\n\nRefreshments provided.

SUMMARY:John Teschendorff : In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:John Teschendorff is an exceptional artist who has had a lifetime of commitment to the visual arts. His creations are respected world-wide as his career has spanned Sydney\, Melbourne\, Canberra\, the United Kingdom\, Israel\, South-East Asia and Europe. \n\n\n\nMany of his experiences of travel and repeated visits to the same spaces have informed his artworks and permeated them with layers of material and conceptual depth. His works are often darkly abstract and conceptually rich; they are like cerebral maps\, mindscapes\, delineating places and events. \n\n\n\nSurrounded by the last ten years of his artistic practice in his solo exhibition echoes of place\, this event presents a unique opportunity to be in conversation with Teschendorff\, to learn more about his abstract compositions\, his making and thinking processes. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments provided.

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH : The Big Teal by Simon Holmes à Court
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to celebrate the Perth launch of Simon Holmes à Court’s new book\, The Big Teal\, the latest in Monash University Publishing’s In the National Interest Series. \n\n\n\nThe author will be joined by Kate Chaney MP\, the Independent Federal Member for Curtin\, for a conversation about the book. \n\n\n\nAbout the book‘We will not achieve net zero in the cafes\, dinner parties and wine bars of our inner cities.’ Little infuriated the forgotten people of the twenty-first century — women and younger voters\, especially — more than Scott Morrison’s deluge of disparagement on the issues that mattered to them. The May 2022 election marked the great re-engagement of those ignored and patronised for too long on climate\, integrity and gender equity. \n\n\n\nThe electoral map has been dramatically redrawn. However\, the triumph of the ‘teals’ was not entirely unexpected to those assisting their rise\, such as Climate 200 founder Simon Holmes à Court. As Australia entered its lost decade on climate action\, he observed that conventional advocacy had become a case of diminishing returns\, and that Cathy McGowan’s election as a community independent in 2013 provided a template for direct political engagement. The result was Climate 200\, a crowdfunded outfit intended to provide the money and expertise to better match the major parties and turbocharge the grassroots movement emerging in thirty-plus electorates. \n\n\n\nDespite a relentless and increasingly shrill campaign of vilification aimed at Holmes à Court and the candidates by the Liberals\, assisted by their media mates\, we saw the election of six new community independent MPs and one senator. It was a victory of facts over fear\, priorities over prejudice. It was a blow to the unfit-for-purpose ‘majoritariat’\, a rejection of the false binary choice between parties that no longer reflect the hopes and complexity of modern democratic Australia. \n\n\n\nThis is the story of how a team of inspired young tech-heads and older sages used their real and virtual-world experience to help a cluster of communities get the representation they wanted. \n\n\n\nTo pre-purchase your book ahead of Perth launch\, click HERE via Boffins Books website and add a note in “Additional Instructions & Comments” box at checkout: “For collection at the launch on 14 October. \n\n\n\nCost: $19.95

SUMMARY:The Water Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Both visually and sonically stunning\, The Water Concerto by Tan Dun is an atmospheric evocation of the sounds of rural China\, where the composer grew up. From the gentle rhythms of women washing laundry in the river to the excited splashes of children playing in the water\, this is a piece that immerses audiences in the sounds of distant shores. \nThe soloist manipulates water through the use of instruments which have been specifically designed for this piece\, and are accompanied by a small chamber ensemble of strings\, clarinet and piano. Moments of the performance also respond to the surrounding Perth Festival exhibition\, Strangers on the Shore\, which explores the encounters between indigenous populations and European and Asian shipwreck survivors on the West Coast of Australia. \nPerformed and designed by Thea Rossen and Jared Yapp of the Ad Lib Collective in collaboration with the Holmes à Court Gallery\, this performance is otherworldly\, dramatic and captivating. \n7pm : Door/Bar Opens – Wine sales available [NB. cashless purchases only]\n8pm : Concert commencesBoth visually and sonically stunning\, The Water Concerto by Tan Dun is an atmospheric evocation of the sounds of rural China\, where the composer grew up.
