SUMMARY:ARTIST IN RESIDENCE // Angela Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Angela Stewart is a member of the ArtCollective WA and her work is currently on show in the exhibition TEN. She will be in residence in the Holmes à Court Gallery @ Vasse Felix from the 14th November to the 2nd December (excluding the 23rd –28th November). \n\n\n\nStewart has been interested in portraiture for the last three decades. Her drawing\, painting and paint/ed photography often make stylistic and thematic reference to the Italian Renaissance historical portraits and the transition of the fresco to easel painting. By studying the work of Sixteenth century Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola\, Stewart became fascinated by the complexity and etiquette of painting by a woman of this age. Her desire was to roll back the veneer of the finished artwork and to imagine signs of hesitation and mistakes to unlace the becoming of a portrait. This notion of ‘artistic doubt’ has since had an influence on Stewart’s more recent oeuvre. \n\n\n\nOver time\, the rendering of her line and brushwork has dissolved to increasingly reveal materiality and process. With oval and circular frames\, she examines traditional elements such as the cameo or motifs of flora and fauna in landscape and from costumes in portraits.

SUMMARY:Terra
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMANCE DATES : 18\, 19 & 20 JANUARY 2024 \n\n\n\nterra is a 50min dance work informed by the knowledge of current and impending ecological loss. An un-trackable choreographic momentum evokes the incremental movement of earth’s tectonic plates; the elemental power of the natural world pushed to its limits and the forces that create change.  \n\n\n\nErupting from an imagination placed under pressure for decades\, terra\, invites us to feel what is happening to the earth\, whilst creating something of awe and beauty. With each performance\, a unique topographical sculptural residue remains\, inviting the audience to continue their imaginative engagement with the work. \n\n\n\nThis piece emerged conceptually and choreographically from Alice’s experience of living in Victoria\, through the pandemic\, fires\, flooding\, threatening winds and an earthquake –disquiet was omnipresent. The resurgence of the natural world during the lockdowns\, particularly in urban spaces\, brought an acute awareness of human impact on our living world. \n\n\n\n‘She moved with the kind of felt precision that could change the meaning of the space around her. She touched the floor and suddenly it was alive. The experience was pure and electrifying’ (Erik Jensen\, Editor-in-chief\, Schwartz Media\,  January 2022). \n\n\n\nABOUT ALICE CUMMINS \n\n\n\nAlice Cummins is a multi-disciplinary artist\, working in dance\, film\, performance and installation. Five decades exploring the nuanced intelligence of the moving body\, interrogating and challenging its social and cultural narratives\, have led to compositional refinement and the distillation of experience into physical performance where aesthetics\, ethics and physiology collide. Her current performance projects reflect the entwinement of personal/artistic\, colonial\, and planetary histories. \n\n\n\nEVENT ENQUIRIES: Laetitia Wilson | +61 424 931 242  :  laetitia.wilson@heytesbury.com.au \n\n\n\nSTART TIME : 7.30pm – duration 50min \n\n\n\nTICKETS : $25-$35 + booking fee \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nhttp://www.alicecummins.com \n\n\n\nPhoto by Emma Fishwick\, Alice Cummins in Terra Rehearsal\, 2023\, courtesy and copyright of the artist.

SUMMARY:ARTIST TALKS: Mandorla Art Award 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging series of free artist talks with some of our local Mandorla finalists. Facilitated by Erin Coates\, these talks will give insights into the processes\, techniques and ideas behind selected works in the 2024 Mandorla Art Award exhibition. \n\n\n\n\nSat\, 1 June 2024 | 1:30-3pm : Olga Cironis\, Sam Bloor\, Tessa MacKay\, Sarah Elson \n\n\n\nSat\, 15 June 2024 | 1:30-3pm : Ross Potter\, Camilla Loveridge\, Sohan Ariel Hayes\, Serena Parker \n\n\n\nTea & coffee provided. Please arrive at 1:15pm for a 1:30pm start. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOlga Cironis is a multidisciplinary artist who explores the murky undertones and impact that history and memory have on personal and shared identity. Her work is described as psychologically loaded with meaning\, provoking and seducing the viewer to question our social and environmental connections. Olga’s artistic investigations are founded upon her Greek\, Czech and Australian heritage. These aspects are used to engage people beyond the familiar.Sam Bloor’s background as a traditional signwriter informs his use of text provocations and large-scale public artworks. Blurring the line between his trade and artistic careers he intends to play with existing perceived notions of value and labour. Sam has exhibited in group and solo shows both nationally and internationally including\, Totem In Tribute (2016) in Edinburgh\, UK\, the Fremantle Print Award (2016/18)\, Rotterdam Photo Festival (2019)\, NL\, and was commissioned to produce a major public work as part of the 2022 Perth Festival program.Sarah Elson’s interest in traditional metalsmithing and its use in contemporary visual arts practice spans 30 + years. She has exhibited locally and internationally including solo exhibitions Anigozanthos (eudaimonia hybrid) at Galerie Düsseldorf 2007\, phloem poetica at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art 2010 and Fasciation – expectations of growth\, Art Collective\, 2020. Her work is held in numerous collections including AGWA and the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Sarah is a member of Art Collective WA.Sohan Ariel Hayes has achieved international acclaim for his large-scale multimedia installations\, public projects and performance collaborations. His site-responsive process works with drawing\, projection and archival materials to invoke particular places\, collective voices and communities of labour. Sohan was one of the key artists involved in the spectacular Boorna Waanginy – The Trees Speak\, shown as a part of Perth Festival in Kings Park over several seasons.Ross Potter is a Kamilaroi man living and working full time as an artist on Wudjuk Noongar Boodjar\, Fremantle. He works with pencil and paper to produce highly detailed representations of his subjects. Through magnifying microscopic features\, Ross brings the abstractions of reality to our attention\, while telling compelling stories of everyday life. Well-known works include the life-size WHALE at High Tide 17 Fremantle Biennale on display at Boola Bardip WA Museum. Ross recently undertook an artist residency in Siglufjörður\, Iceland. \n\n\n\nCamilla Loveridge is a printmaker and has a particular passion for drawing. She has exhibited around Australia and overseas\, has received awards for her work\, and is represented in public and private collections. She was curator of the Mandorla Art Prize (2009-2012) and worked for the Art for Change Foundation in New Delhi (2016) as an international artist in residence. Camilla also studies part time as a PhD candidate in Creative Practice Research at Notre Dame University in Fremantle.Based in Walyalup Fremantle\, Tessa MacKay’s paintings speak to the discipline of Hyperrealism. The works simultaneously embrace the medium of paint\, and subtle but intentional instances of less-refined brushwork provides relief and reminds the viewer they are before an artwork made by human hands; an interpretation\, not a reproduction. At a time when high resolution images are more ubiquitous and disposable than ever before\, it is through the apparent labour and time involved that Tessa strives to facilitate the viewer’s connection with the subject matter embedded in her paint.Serena Parker holds degrees in Fine Arts and Education\, and merges her passion for art and teaching in her professional practices. Notable for her poesis-inspired miniature pieces exhibited at Heathcoate Gallery in 2011\, she explores the nexus of time\, place\, and representation. Majoring in painting\, she delves into material culture\, fascinated by the history and language of materials. Serena’s work reflects a profound interplay between past and present\, inviting viewers to ponder human complexities. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGeneral enquiries: info@mandorlaart.com | Phone: +61 407 089 224 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHolmes à Court Gallery @ no.10Douglas Street\, Gooyaman | West PerthExhibition: 25 May – 15 JuneOpen: Tues – Sat\, 11am – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: Ross Potter\, Cold Water\, pencil on paper\, 130 x 110 cm

SUMMARY:Cygnus Arioso // 40th Notes : Celebrating with Music\, fundraising for Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Akiko Miyazawa  \n\n\n\nAkiko is turning 40! \n\n\n\nFor this special occasion\, Akiko reflects on her life with music; \n\n\n\n“Music\, which has accompanied me ever since I started learning the violin at age 3. And the joyous world of chamber music\, which has been my ever-present guide. So of course for my birthday I’m excited to tick off one more in my ongoing Beethoven String Quartet Project\, details of which are outlined below. But I also want to celebrate how grateful I am for this life\, for my parents who instilled this lifelong treasure\, and for everything and everyone who has shaped who I am today. DESCRIPTION:**Due to unforseen circumstances\, this event has been cancelled.** \n\n\n\nJoin us for a scintillating conversation as Richard Weller delves into his recent series of paintings. SUMMARY:OPENING: Drift Woods | Elmari Steyn @ Vasse Felix
DESCRIPTION:Drift Woods is a solo exhibition by Elmari Steyn featuring a considered selection of recent art works. Steyn’s unique-state etching prints take the viewer into a wandering\, many-pathed narrative journey; into exquisitely detailed worlds of wonder\, sadness and delight. Drawing on her background in Namibia\, Steyn folds personal stories into the familiar subject matter of trees and boats\, often pictured in unison. Trees and boats become places of mystery that compel the imagination. They hold memories and emotions. Tree houses and boat houses feature as evocative of the idea of home\, as well as holding a sense of child-like wonder and playfulness. Throughout the works there is a frisson between transience and stasis\, between putting down roots and taking to the skies or seas. Drift Woods\, enables you to consider these states of stillness and movement as you enter and drift through entrancing realms of the imagination.  \n\n\n\nTo be officially opened by JANET HOLMES à COURT AC  \n\n\n\n11.00 am | Sunday\, 26 January 2025  \n\n\n\nOnly light refreshments will be served during the formal opening in the Gallery.  \n\n\n\nTo book for lunch separately\, contact Vasse Felix : P. 9756 5050 or email restaurant@vassefelix.com.au

SUMMARY:TESTIMONY to the Atom Bomb | two survivors speak
DESCRIPTION:As a key part of Never Again: The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition\, we are deeply honoured to present two people who have directly and personally witnessed the detonation of an atomic bomb. We believe their testimonies will provide a uniquely poignant human experience to those listening. The first is Ms Yahata Teruko\, who as an eight-year-old child\, experienced and survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in August 1945. Since then\, she has devoted herself to sharing her experience\, and inspiring us to understand what happened to our sisters and brothers on that fateful day\, and how it should never be allowed to occur again. The second person is a local West Australian\, Mr Bill Plewright. Mr Plewright served in Occupied Japan with HMAS Bataan in 1947-48 and visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He is also a veteran of three nuclear tests: Operation Hurricane (Montebello Islands 1952) and Operation Mosaic G1 and G2 (Montebello Islands 1956). Though both Ms Teruko and Mr Plewright are in their nineties\, they are both fit\, and powerful and articulate speakers. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n12.00pm | Saturday\, 10 May 2025 \n\n\n\n#FREE\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nImage:  Photo by Kazuma Hayashi\, provided by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

SUMMARY:ARTIST+Curator's TALK
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate conversation with artist Marcus Beilby and curator Connie Petrillo as they explore the themes and processes behind The Real and the Remembered . \n\n\n\nThis rare opportunity offers insight into Beilby’s photorealist practice spanning nearly five decades\, from his earliest work “Whatever Happened to Sunday Mournings” (1979) to the luminous “Yellow Room” (2025). Discover how everyday objects—a shovel\, a broom\, a yellow room—are transformed through patient observation into meditations on memory and time. \n\n\n\nFollowing the discussion\, enjoy a guided tour of the exhibition where Marcus will share the stories behind individual works and his approach to capturing that liminal space between the real and the remembered. This is a unique chance to hear directly from an artist who has worked with quiet dedication toward this moment\, building a body of work that asks us to reconsider how we see the ordinary world around us. \n\n\n\nEach painting in this exhibition is a small act of preservation\, a way of holding time still. \n\n\n\n2pm – 4pm | Saturday\, 29th November 2025 \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIMAGE: Whatever Happened to Sunday Mourning\, 1979  Oil on linen  118 x 141 cm \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGALLERY HOURS: \n\n\n\nWed–Fri 11am – 5pm  |  Sat 12pm – 4pm  | 8 November – 13 December 2025

SUMMARY:TIME to BURN @ Vasse Felix
DESCRIPTION:Time to Burn\, an exhibition bringing together artists responding to urgent environmental concerns surrounding contemporary forest management. \n\n\n\nCurated by Christine Gregory\, Time to Burn examines current fire management practices\, with a focus on aerial prescribed burning in Western Australia’s Great Southern and South West regions. \n\n\n\nThrough artistic and community perspectives\, the exhibition explores the environmental\, cultural\, and ecological consequences of these methods. \n\n\n\n“The Southwest forests are a biodiversity hotspot\, with many unique plants and animals existing nowhere else on Earth\, yet they are under threat from many angles including inappropriate fire management. The WA Government should take inspiration from these artists\, and be creative\, considered and informed in re envisioning fire management in the Southwest to protect both nature and communities.” Jess Boyce\, Director Western Australian Forrest Alliance (WAFA) https://wafa.org.au/about-us/ \n\n\n\nThe exhibition aims to provoke informed dialogue and encourage alternative approaches to fire management\, highlighting the irreversible damage caused by prevailing practices. Time to Burn asks a vital question: how can we protect both our communities and the natural environment—before time runs out? \n\n\n\nThe exhibition features Western Australian artists Kate Campbell-Pope\, Annette Davis\, Elizabeth Edmonds\, Peter Hill\, Sandra Hill\, Paul Moncrieff\, Kim Perrier\, Ben Pushman\, Tania Spencer\, Monique Tippett\, Peter Usher\, and Tony Windberg. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is part of the South West Biennial 2026 run by Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. \n\n\n\nTo be officially opened by JANET HOLMES à COURT AC \n\n\n\n11.00 am | Sunday\, 12th April 2026 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nClick HERE to Register for Official Opening\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOnly light refreshments will be served during the formal opening in the Gallery. \n\n\n\nTo book for lunch separately\, contact  Vasse Felix :  P.  9756 5050 or email  restaurant@vassefelix.com.au \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nImage credit: Peter Hill\, New Day\, 2024\, oil paint on burnt Marri timber

SUMMARY:Ron Nyisztor ARTIST TALK @ no.10
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful discussion with Ron Nyisztor around the works in his exhibition Hope Valley Road : an Autobiography \n\n\n\nThis project refers to the deserted neighbourhood as motivation for a visual autobiography\, an alternative\, extreme self-portrait. A likeness that is comprised from the depiction of motor vehicles associated with his journey\, stalled vestiges\, trained on any other horizon. \n\n\n\nThe artist grew up in this locality and considers the romantic connotations of the road’s namesake to be at odds with its aquired bleakness. Although the locality presents many conflicting sentiments\, it has been referential\, providing inspiration throughout the artist’s career. \n\n\n\nIf you’re wanting to hear more from the artist\, as he unpacks how an exhibition of vehicle depictions\, intriguing names and an overall unique idea of a ‘self-portrait’ encompasses who Ron Nyisztor is; then this is the perfect event for you! \n\n\n\n2.00pm – 3.30pm  |  Saturday\, 18 April 2026 \n\n\n\nHolmes à Court Gallery @ no.10 // Douglas Street\, West Perth \n\n\n\n#FREE\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nClick HERE to Register\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGALLERY HOURS : \n\n\n\nWed–Fri 11am – 5pm |  Sat 12pm – 4pm  | 20 March  – 24 April 2026 \n\n\n\nCLOSED: Sun-Tues & Public Holidays (inc.
