Marjorie Coleman | Lyrical Stitch
Marjorie Coleman, Leaf Litter, 2002
This major solo exhibition spans five decades to celebrate the creative life and prolific stitched art work of Western Australian artist Marjorie Coleman.
Stitching on cloth gives voice to Marjorie’s stories. Using contemporary stitch as an expressive medium Marjorie produces rich evocative pieces to represent her ideas and experiences, to tell a story of ongoing exploration, and concern for her local surroundings. She takes pleasure from working with cloth, drawing on a lifetime of intimate knowledge, to stitch for her own enlightenment. This exhibition marks the culmination of a series of exhibitions celebrating fibre, textile and stitched art.

WAFTA 2020 Members’ Exhibition
The 2020 Members exhibition is a significant and ground breaking exhibition for the organisation. The decision to proceed through the Covid 19 epidemic was considered in depth. When choosing a title for the 2020 exhibition back in 2019, three main issues came to the fore as things that have gained importance ever since. These were: mental health; sustainability/the environment and; women’s work. The title, Hanging by a Thread, encompassed all of these and by continuing with the exhibition it allowed members to creatively record their experiences and respond to the time of lock down and isolation. The history of women’s crafts has been one of using textiles to record major events, for example the suffragette hankies and the early Union movement banners. Hanging by a Thread can be seen as a continuation of this history. Members have responded with such a wide range of diverse materials and techniques that this exhibition is shaping up to be a very memorable one with over 170 works included.

FIBREdown south is in its final month. There are four weeks left to enjoy the diverse artistic excellence of fibre and textile works in the beautiful surrounds of Margaret River.
FIBREpresents stitched, threaded, strung, rubbed, ripped, folded and pressed Fibre art. From silky and delicate, to course and robust, the works speak of material manipulation and ritualistic gestures of repetitive stitching and rubbing. Everyday clothing is cut, re-stitched and sculpted anew; forms of nature are enveloped in felt and fabric; human hair is shaped and strung together; paper is stitched into and; native flora and fauna are pictured and sculpted of, with and on fibres.
Coming out of a time of social isolation, this exhibition is about intimacy; it compels the sense of touch. It also invites us to consider the intricately crafted qualities of the natural world around us and the cultural significance of fibre and textiles as contemporary art.

Tracing the Swan follows the story of the settlement of the Swan River Colony with the swan as the central character in artworks about race, difference and the unexpected.
In a play between fiction and reality, the black swan is traced throughout the history of the colonisation of Western Australia up to the present day. From historical to contemporary artworks, the exhibition explores how WA was presented to potential settlers, how its landscape was impacted and has changed over time and how the swan stands as emblem of WA against this tide of changes in its real environment.

Other News
Curtis Taylor, Scars, 2019 (detail)
This large scale painting by Perth based Martu artist Curtis Taylor is a significant recent addition to existing works by Taylor in the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Taylor is an award winning Martu artist who works across installation, sculpture, painting and film. This work could equally refer to the scars on a body or cut into the land; the fiery red pierces through a matte charcoal background as a strong symbolic statement.
Julie Renita Woods, Minyma Kutjara - Special Story for Irrunytju, 2020
This recently acquired, expansive work by Julie Renita Woods pictures a story of two sisters on a difficult journey through Irruntju (Wingellina) - her mother’s country. The two women story is one of the most important women’s creation stories of the Western and Southern deserts and a special story for Irrunytju.
