Concrete E X P A N D E D
2 June - 22 September 2019

OPENING 9 June

HàC Vasse Felix

This exhibition presents geometric abstraction in colour, design, pattern and shape. It contributes to a conversation about Minimalist and Concrete Art in the new millennium. It suggests an expansion of the genre of Concrete Art. Hard edged minimal abstraction, pure colour forms and sculptural light works coalesce and converse in philosophical questions of simplicity, pure forms, aesthetic experience and existence.

Talk by Clarissa Ball
Director of UWA Institute of Advanced Studies

Saturday 13th April 2019
2.00-4.00pm

HàC @no.10
Douglas St, West Perth

In this presentation Clarissa will give an overview of Harald Vike’s career as charted in the exhibition, Harald Vike - Spirit of the Man. With reference to major works on display, Clarissa will trace some of the key themes that dominated Vike’s art from the time of his arrival in Perth in August 1929 until his death in 1988. Consideration will then be given to the work that Vike made in Perth during the 1930s. That decade was one of substantial economic, social, cultural and political turmoil and Vike’s involvement in a number of cultural and political organisations saw him produce some extraordinary images that at the time, and to this day, run counter to the popular understanding about art and culture in 1930s Perth.

By turning to a number of 1930s works in the exhibition, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, Clarissa will discuss how Vike’s art provides unique and valuable insights into our history.

Afternoon tea will be provided and also available on the day will be a unique opportunity to view a number of Vike paintings from private collections throughout Perth, on display for this event only.

PUBLIC TALK

Isabella Kirland, Paradise Parrots, oil on canvas, 2015

Stilled Life: the art of Isabella Kirkland
Thursday 11 April, 6-7.30pm
Fox Lecture Theatre, Arts Building, UWA

Isabella Kirkland is a fine art painter specialising in Natural History. Fusing the style of the 17th Century Dutch Masters with the more classical naturalistic tradition, Kirkland’s art addresses the ecological challenges that we currently face. Her magnificently sumptuous and complex oil paintings serve as a meticulous visual record of the many life forms that are on the brink of annihilation or are already extinct. Kirkland’s art bears witness to loss and testifies to the existence of those animals and plants that in the near future will be relegated to the historical record of this world.

In this lecture Isabella Kirkland will discuss her paintings and the role that her art plays in drawing attention to the loss of life forms. Isabella will be introduced by Janet Holmes à Court, AC.

Following Isabella's presentation, Tim Allard, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and Professor Stephen Hopper from the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management at UWA will give a short talk on animal extinctions and declining biodiversity in Australia.
