ABOUT

Bread of Bone features new works from established Western Australian artists. This exhibition will focus on such ideas as food security, differing attitudes toward food, the impact of climate change on food supplies and the value of eating locally. Each artist’s perspective on food is explored through the staple technique of drawing, additionally considering thoughts and feelings toward modern interpretations of grinding bones to make bread.

COLLECTION FOCUS

Abstract Art by Women in the 1980s

ABOUT

This is the second instalment of the Collection Focus series of annual exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Here we present art works which have rarely been on display. This selection reveals the substantial contribution women artists have made to the field of abstract art in Australia. Women artists have played a fundamental role in the development of abstract art throughout the 20th century. The specific period of focus for this exhibition is the 1980s and the works span across painting, collage, ceramics and sculpture, to celebrate and acknowledge the crucial significance of abstract art by women in Australia in the 1980s.

John Teschendorf : Echoes of Place

ABOUT

John Teschendorff: Echoes of Place is a solo exhibition spanning a decade of practice - 2013-2023 - and presenting works from an ongoing project - The History of Ideas. This never before exhibited selection of artworks shows influences of Italo Calvino and Guy Debord's thesis of invisible cities and concept of the dérive. These ideas provide a way into confronting the landscape as a memory, as a formally constructed space where dialogues of disquiet are informed by the reality of the denial of movement. Whilst much is darkly allegorical, there is always colour to be found, encouraging a belief that humanity will survive the calculated horror and depravity of recent conflicts and events.

Acquisitions
Pantiji Mary McLean, Kapu Walla, 1999 (top), Joyce Winsley, Untitled, ND (bottom left) and Malcom Ellis, Untitled, ND (bottom right).

These artworks were recently acquired from a private collection. They each complement different parts of the collection. The McLean painting is a unique work from the artist, showing an abstract style with the absence of the figures she is so widely known for. Winsley was a nationally regarded fibre textile artist working out of Narrogin and the Ellis table top forms a part of the story of the Carrolup artists.
