Grace COSSINGTON-SMITH   1892  - 1984

Grace Cossington-Smith was born in Sydney in 1892. She studied with Dattilo Rubbo at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and attended drawing classes at the Winchester School of Art, England and at Stettin, Germany. She returned to Sydney in 1914, however it was not until her work with Roland Wakelin and Roy de Maistre and the formation of the Contemporary Group in 1926, that her contribution to modern painting in Australia became evident. Her paintings evoke an intimacy and lightness of colour and frequently depict sunny interiors and domestic scenes. By 1970 she had become widely recognised as an important figure in Australian art.
