A self taught and prolific painter, Meston settled in Western Australia on his arrival from Scotland in 1897. He initially opened a sign writing business in Kalgoorlie before moving to Perth. As a member of the West Australian Society of Artists from 1898 to 1933 and later serving on the committee, Meston would have been an associate of Linton. He exhibited regularly and painted numerous views of Perth and the environs that showed a high level of observation of the local flora. While his work was tonal in nature he managed to portray the West Australian landscape as distinct from the European model of many of the artists active during this period.
