Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri was born at Napperby Station, north west of Alice Springs, Central Australia. He has become one of the most highly regarded painters of the Papunya region and has exhibited widely since the 1970s. He is represented in all major Australian collections and in many international collections. Originally pursuing an artistic career in woodcarving, Clifford Possum began experimenting with paintings based on traditional Western Desert motifs in the late 1960s, with his brother Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa. His distinctive paintings, reflecting the many Dreamings or traditional stories of which he is custodian, are among the largest and most intricate of the ‘dot’ style typical of Central Desert Aboriginal art.
